Pricing for New Brand Photographers: Tips for Building Your Branding Portfolio

This is a hot topic. I briefly touched on it here on the blog in my post about getting started in brand photography. But someone recently asked me if I have any advice on pricing for new brand photographers. So, today, I'm going to talk about how to set prices and find clients when you are just beginning to build your portfolio.

First, there's one important question I'd have to ask any photographer who's struggling with how to price their sessions. How much experience do you bring to the table? This is a huge part of the conversation! The value of your work is going to be entirely different if you're someone who has years of experience working in other types of photography than it is if you're someone who's just starting out as a photographer.

So, with that in mind, here's my take on pricing for two different types of photographers.

TIPS ON PRICING FOR NEW BRAND PHOTOGRAPHERS

1. My advice for total newbie photographers:

If you are a brand-new photographer who's never shot for clients, the best way to build your brand photography portfolio is to shoot for free. But this doesn't mean giving free sessions to just anyone. Instead, reach out to brands you'd like to add to your portfolio. Offer like-minded businesses complimentary portfolio-building branding shoots. This way, you'll be sure your portfolio reflects the kind of work you actually want to do.

2. My advice for experienced photographers:

When talking about pricing for new brand photographers, established, experienced photographers have things a lot easier. If you're already a photographer, your transition into brand photography should begin with your pre-existing clients. Reach out to anyone you've worked with in the past. Let them know you're now offering personal branding sessions. Many people work for themselves or have a side hustle. So, whether you realize it or not, you probably already have a pool of potential clients to draw from.

Whether you are a brand-spankin' new photographer or an experienced pro, I hope this advice helps you build your brand photography portfolio.
